The Little Wedding Planner Joins Society Weddings

Article by: Gina DeMarco, PR Marketing Manager
It’s not everyday that an opportunity comes around that you’ve dreamt of your whole life. I attended the Art Institutes Miami International University of Art & Design. At 17, I was in a city with a life of its own, full of many doors for opportunity, but paired with lots of competition. Uncertain of what direction I would go with my degree, I studied Fashion Merchandising. Since most of my fellow classmates were competing for the same jobs and positions, I knew in order to stand out, I would need to find my niche. After seeing The Wedding Planner in 2001, I knew from then that that was my calling.

Since then, I have built an extensive portfolio of projects that focuses solely on Weddings and Event Planning. Professors referred to me as “The Little Wedding Planner,” and my classmates looked forward to my projects because I presented them with much enthusiasm and passion. However, after graduating with an Associates Degree, I decided to follow up with Bachelors in Marketing and Management. I knew I would have a better chance in the “real world” if I had a broader degree. But even so, Event Planning remained in my mind, and as much as I had been introduced to new industries, I followed my heart and wouldn’t budge. I was born to be an Event Planner.

Unfortunately, this industry is very hard to break into. The only candidates who succeed are the ones who are focused, dedicated, and determined to follow their passion. However, since I am one of them, I always knew in my heart, there would be an open door for me if I just kept pursuing. Sure enough, this past March, I was lucky enough to be selected as an intern for Society Weddings, a full service Event Planning agency, as their PR Marketing Manager. My role is to help re-brand and re-vamp the company. In order to do so, I need to attend networking events and industry expo’s to keep up with trends and promote Society Weddings. I am also responsible for finding new venues to host events, re-designing the web-site and promotional tools, and meeting with new clients to discuss details of their events.

They say that patience is a virtue, and with that being said, I have to agree. The past six months have been a dream come true. Seven years ago, I predicted I would be in my situation, and here I am. Working for someone as talented as Janet Graves is not only a blessing, but an honor. Having not just a colleague but a “teammate” like Robyn, is not so shabby either. I am here because I believed in myself and followed my heart. I will stay, because I arrived and have no intention of leaving.
